Let’s face it, most if not all (pretty sure it’s all) pet owners will take photos of their pets. You’ve seen awe inspiring photos of pets and you will try to take nice photos of your pets. Do you wonder why some photographers always manage to take nice photos? Is it because they use good cameras?
Having a good camera will surly help but that’s secondary, a camera is just a tool for you to capture images. Let me give you an example, you cooked a very good dish, would you think that the pot you used for cooking as a very good pot that created the tasty dish?
Having said that, as a professional pet photographer in Singapore, we do have some useful tools that we use during our photography sessions. While these tools may not apply to casual photographers, it’d still be good to know how to create a good photo.
- Most important tool in studio photography – studio lights with softbox. Lightings are important as they are the main pillar in studio photography. A well placed light will help create better photos.
- Most useful tool in Pet photography – noise makers. These helps to direct the pet’s attention to your camera or to anywhere you want them to look. We use a variety of noise makers in case they get accustomed to one sound and will ignore you. Whistles, kazoos, noise maker apps and even your own voice are good tools to use to attract their attention.
- Treats – most pets will be motivated by treats, though some pets will eat the treats and get back to doing their things ?
- Toys – have a variety of toys to keep them interested. Keep their favourite toys for last in case all toys don’t work.
There you go, apart from the studio lights, I’m sure pet owners are able to get the rest of the tools to help capture good photos. If all else fails, you can always engage a professional photographers to take nice photos.
